A few nights back, I told Mr...

"Lets both try our very best to be the best muslim and muslimah, so that when any one of us leave the world first, we will be sad because of the longing feeling for each other and because we will miss each other very much BUT we will be happy and calm because we know, insyaAllah, we will see each other again in Jannah..and by then, it will be for eternity.."

If you love your family and you want to be with them till eternity, love Allah, and remind them to love Allah too.

Remember. Dunya is temporary.
Our weakness? Love for the World & Fear of Death (Cinta Dunia & Takut Mati)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once said (predicted)..

“The People will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their food.” Someone asked, “Will that be because of our small numbers at that time?” He replied, “No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be froth and scum like that carried down by a torrent (of water), and Allah will take the fear of you from the breasts (hearts) of your enemy and cast al-wahn (weakness) into your hearts.” Someone asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is al-wahn?” He replied, “Love of the world and dislike of death.”

An authentic hadith recorded by Abu Dawud and Ahmad

Last Friday,  me and Mr went to a talk by Shaykh Abdulbary Yahya in Taylor's University. The title of the talk was "The Shepherd's Path'. It was about the story of our beloved Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.

This was our second time attending an Islamic talk together, the first was Imam Suhaib Webb's talk about 8 months back. Its always a good feeling, attending Islamic talks with him. Like for an hour or so, we were both on the same page, gaining the same knowledge on Islam, telling each other "Eh write that!" or giving eye contact or signs that say "Hah! Listen to that!"... and I love the follow up discussions we have in the car later after the talks.. (although it may sometimes turn out to debates and fights haha)

I notice that most of the attendees came in groups, probably a usual thing for them, to attend these seminars with a group of friends who share the same interests. I'm sure they often get invites to attend these seminars to improve their knowledge in Islam, how lucky!

As for me and Mr, I have to say that it has never really been our top priority, but I'm glad that we remind each other, that sometimes, we need to attend Islamic talks, in order to remind ourselves too. "Eh jom! There's this talk on... yadda...yadda...yadda..."

We can be a bit picky and bias though. Honestly, we love it when the foreigners talk. First of all, its because its conducted in English. Secondly, because they're easier to relate to our modern practices and it really gets to the heart. We don't get reminders on how we'll be punished if we disobey, instead we're being taught and reminded on how we can improve ourselves and purify our hearts - a more overall positive approach.

There was a moment during the talk, Shaykh talked about the day of the death of our Prophet S.A.W, and while he was telling the story, he teared. I looked around and I saw another 5-6 others, bringing out tissues from their pockets/bags, and wiped their tears too. Me and about 50 others in the hall just listened to his story, just like it was another story.

At that moment, I felt ashamed. Ashamed that I didn't love our Prophet as much as these people did. If we love someone, when we talk about them or their deaths, we can feel the sadness in our hearts. But how can we love someone, if we don't know the person well enough? I was ashamed.

Here we are in this modern world, trying our best to know every single thing about Beyonce's life and her pregnancy, go hysteria over Justin Bieber, and mourn on the death of Steve Jobs, and we read books of top international footballers, and we don't even bother to know our Prophet a little better? Other than stories being told by our Ustaz/Ustazah?

In order to love someone, we need to know and understand the person well. What have we done to understand and know our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W well?

Oh. What a reminder.

Mr told me the other day to double check all my recitation in solat. So making full use of my new ipad (heeeeeee) i youtube for all the compulsory readings in solat. Terkejut weyhhh! Ada yg tertinggal ayat, ada yg salah sebut, ada yg terepusing-pusing. Its funny how we do this EVERY day but its still not perfect - mungkin terlepas pandang, mungkin asyik duk speedy gonzalez je solat sampai tanpa disedari, tunggang langgang bacaan.

Jom betulkan bacaan dalam solat rakan-rakan! Tahiyat awal/akhir, doa qunut, al-fatihah, semualah! Solat tu tiang agama :)

These days, many marry for the wrong reasons. Some for money, some for power, some for love – or maybe lust? We decide on marriage based on JUST emotions & feelings – but who are we really? Imperfect human beings.

I always believe that yes – we must trust our feelings – but we must also never forget to seek for Allah’s guidance because HE knows what’s best for us. We always forget that, don’t we? We always forget the power of Allah. Always pray for the best for ourselves. InsyaAllah we will fall in love with THE one.

And when in doubt, in uncertainty, you may do solat istikharah:

Solat Istikharah

Many are worried of losing the one you’re currently in love with, but not to worry: if he’s not the right one for you , insyaAllah he will be brought far away from you, your feelings for him might slowly fade away too. If he’s the right one for you, you will feel it. You will be satisfied and sure of your decision. If still in doubt, do this solat every other day, until you’ve found the answer. God will guide your through your instincts and feelings - naluri dan perasaan. You will feel very calm with the guidance, insyaAllah.

Always put your faith in Allah – redha dengan ketentuanNya. Because like I said, HE knows best. Jodoh itu di tangan Tuhan :)

Yes. I have finally decided to not wear the hijab. I really felt that I wasn't ready for it. I realized that wearing the hijab isn't just about covering the head. It comes with a lot more. It's about dressing appropriately, it's about 'jaga perangai'. It's about representing and being a right muslimah.

Mungkin keimananku masih belum kuat. Aku masih lagi terpengaruh dengan duniawi.

I tried. I did. And I lasted for 5 months.

I always knew that I'd one day wear the hijab. Maybe when Mr. encouraged me, I felt excited, as it has always been what I wanted to do. And at that point, I really felt I was ready. I told myself "Just do it!" without thinking long ahead. In just one week, I started buying shawls and scarfs, and then I just wore them. Maybe I was too extreme. Maybe I should have prepared myself for it, mentally and physically. Maybe. I don't know, I really don't know.

When I think about it, those times people asked me, "Is this permanent?", I replied, "InsyaAllah, try dulu. Kalau tak ready, nanti bukak balik,". That statement itself has shows that I was giving it a try. I just didn't expect that it'll go as far as 5 months.

Initially, I thought of not-wearing them outside of the office as I was afraid of what others might say, then I felt like a hypocrite. Mr. also said, "Kita jangan malu and takut dengan manusia, malu and takut dengan Tuhan," As expected, there were many weird stares and gossips around.

I will have to agree with Mr's statement. Wearing the hijab is a very good thing. People around should be encouraging each other. You congratulate us when we give it a try, but when we fail, you penalize us for it. You talk behind our backs. What you should've done is, "It's okay, you tried. Try harder the next time," and then keep on encouraging us to wear the hijab. This kind of busy-body gossip people only make it harder for other girls out there to even attempt to try covering up. It's either you wear it or you don't. No trying. No.

Maybe many are used to wearing the hijab; either in school or from small, but for someone like me, who has never wear them other than during religious occasion, it really isn't an easy change. I needed a lot of support and change in lifestyle.

Aku akan cuba, untuk menguatkan lagi keimananku ini, dan bila sudah rasa cukup bersedia, insyaAllah, aku akan mula berhijab. Please, pray for me.

No. I'm not proud of this. But I am proud that I managed to wear them for 5 months and insyaAllah one day, permanently :)

"Kalau hendak berubah, berubahlah bukan kerana manusia tetapi berubah kerana Allah.Kalau berubah kerana manusia, takut satu hari nanti, kita kalah.Kalau berubah kerana Allah, Insya Allah bleh menang."

Apa gunanya akal fikiran?

Hana Tajima Simpson. A British-Japanese designer from London. She converted to Muslim 6 years back. I'm sure many Muslim women have heard of her, if not, her popular fashion website: Maysaa.

I was reading her profile and came across this:

One of the first things I did when I became Muslim was to donate all my ‘un-Islamic’ clothes to my little sister, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Six years later and a fair few of those items have slipped back into my wardrobe along with other things I thought I’d never be able to wear.  It was a long process, trying to find the right balance, but I never wanted to lose sight of my own personal style and self expression.  The secret to it all is simple, if elusive… feel comfortable.

She's said it all right. I know my process of finding the right balance will take quite sometime. Getting there, insyaAllah! :D

Oh and she's also popular for her inner satin scarf, which covers the neck area. You can just simply put on any scarf/shawl without having to worry of the neck showing.

This is Hana with her inner satin snood.
Here's Yuna, also wearing the inner satin with Hana.

Another of Hana's style with her inner satin.
Mine's on the way! I'll give my personal reviews once I've received it. Have you ordered yours?

Up to date, it has been almost 5 months since I started wearing the hijab. I have been okay the first few months, until lately, that I suddenly feel like not-wearing them anymore. I'm not sure if its the devil whispering or if I'm really really not ready.

I'm a very very laid back person when it comes to dressing.Comfort always comes first before beauty. I used to wear huge T-shirts and jumpers with black tights, and pair them up with a sling back and my birkenstock sandals. Sometimes I'll just wear shorts with my fav Havaianas slippers. Hair is usually left tangled.

Now that I'm wearing the hijab, all these laid back fashion doesn't seem to fit well. I need to find the right colour of hijab to match my attire. I need to make sure that my attire covers up; which is quite a problem because I don't seem to have that many long sleeve shirts and pants. I also need to make sure that I don't dress up like an aunty (makcik) or a maid, making sure that my hijab looks modern and young. Most of them time, I feel like I'm not being myself and that I really miss my old-self. I sometimes miss having the freedom of wearing skirts and shorts anytime I want.

Sometimes, I also feel like a hypocrite. I find it very hard to even pray 5 times a day, and yet here I am, wearing the hijab. I feel like I'm just pretending to be this nice Muslimah.

People around also seem to have this perspective that a girl with a hijab is a nice goody-goody un-cool girl who is no fun :(

I talked to 2 of my hijab-wearing-girlfriends , they told me that it might just be a phase. They said if I'm really not ready and feel uncomfortable, I would have felt it the first few weeks of wearing it, but having reaching my 5th month is actually quite an achievement. They also told me to not put too much pressure on the new image. It's just covering the head. I can still be my old self:

"Just because you're wearing the hijab, doesn't mean you can't go for karaoke or that you can't hold your boyfriend's hands. To be a good muslim, there are processes. Allah doesn't expects us to change 360 in a day. So give yourself sometime to adjust and adapt. Deciding to wear the hijab, is already a big step on its own,"

"NO one is perfect. Even we sometimes miss our prayers. Iman is something that sometimes come and go. We just need to find ways in finding it again,"

"Why don't you go and shop for new attires? Go all out in changing your wardrobe. At least, when you look good, you will be more confident with yourself,"

I remember how I really really wanted to wear the hijab before, and now that I'm wearing it, I feel otherwise. The grass IS always greener on the other side huh? Heeeee.

I need to give time to others to get used to this new me too. I think its normal for people to have the typical mind-set of an un-cool hijab girl, but its really up to me to change their perspectives. Be myself. Be myself. Be myself.

Change is never an easy process. We all need patience and courage in doing so. I need all the support I can to get used being this new me.
